It’s not easy to make a name for yourself in that American music mecca of Austin, Texas but Carry Illinois is doing that. First off, they don’t use Texas in their name, but Illinois. Why? Because Illinois is where singer/songwriter/guitarist Lizzy Lehman grew up.
But more importantly, the band has crafted an impressively self-assured debut disc. They mine a dreamy melodic rock sound that could have been found on the airwaves in any of the past few decades. There’s a touch of Neko Case’s husky croon in Lehman’s vocals but her songs feel a bit more earthy than Case’s recent, more artful efforts.
Here is the video of the album’s title track, Alabaster, that was filmed at a friend’s farm out in rural Dale, Texas.
