Go See Hear In L.A. Jan. 6-12 (the Albert Lee Birthday edition)

Well, it looks like the holiday season is behind us. It’s the first full week of January. Besides catching up on all the work you neglected the past few weeks, you can also catch some good music too. Just to ease you back into things, the week does start out slowly.

Jan. 9

Top Show: The Canyon Club hosts a 70th birthday bash for the great guitarist Albert Lee. The guest list includes Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, the Desert Rose Band, Peter Asher, Jerry Donahue, Laurence Juber, Rosie Flores, Scarlet Rivera and more.

Jan. 10

Trombone-playing singer/songwriter Smoota serves up the funk at Cheetahs, while Youngblood Hawke headlines the first First Friday at the Natural History Museum.
Jan. 11

Top Show: Many top local acts – Dawes, Nick Waterhouse, The Tyde, Robert Francis – along with other performers (such as Neal Casal and Pink Mountaintops) will be at the Echo to the We All Join Hands benefit for local drummer Richard Gowen.

SoCal legend David Lindley has a show up in Ojai and Tennis will be holding court (I couldn’t resist that pun) at the Satellite.

Jan. 12

Top Show: Former Moody Blues and Wings guitarist Denny Laine will be joined by Bangles drummer Debbi Peterson and John Wicks from The Records at McCabe’s. I’m curious to hear what they’ll be doing.

Another retro Sunday show finds the Motels at the Whisky A Go Go.
