Sad to hear the news that Phil Everly passed away on Friday. I recently wrote about the multiple Everly Brothers tribute CDs that came out in 2013 (from the well-publicized Norah Jones/Billy Joe Armstrong collaboration to the ones by Will Oldham and also the Chapin Sisters). While I heard the Everly Brothers hits growing up, my appreciation for them really solidified when Rockpile (a band I so loved then and now) included a bonus EP on Everly Brothers tunes on the first pressing of their sole album Seconds of Pleasure. I also have the great fortune of seeing the Everly Brothers when they opened for Simon & Garfunkel in 2003. It’s nice that the brothers’ music has come back on the radar again. They certainly were among the sweetest harmonizing duos in the past 60 years.
Here is an old clip (1961?) of them doing “Crying In The Rain,” which was one of the tunes Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe covered on the Rockpile EP.
