A big Big Star tribute at SxSW

For those heading to SxSW this year, get your tickets early for the all-star tribute to Big Star‘s Third album that will be taking place  to the Paramount Theatre on March 15.

The legendary album will be performed in its entirety by a band led by Big Star drummer Jody Stephens. The rest of the main group includes R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, Let’s Active’s Mitch Easter and dB’s Chris Stamey on guitars and Charles Cleaver on piano – plus Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow from the Posies and Peter Buck are scheduled to be among the special guests.

Before the performance there will be a screening of the work-in-progress documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me. Sadly this salute marks the second anniversary of Alex Chilton’s all-too-early death in 2010. Signed commemorative posters for the show will be on sale at the theatre, with proceeds benefiting the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. A special vinyl version of Third may still be available from the fine folks at Omnivore Recordings for those interested.

Wish I could be there. Let me know how it is.
