Got word this week that Golden Palomino guru Anton Fier is working on a new CD with Drivin N Cryin frontman Kevn Kinney. The album is said to be a mix of old and new Kinney tunes as well as some cover tunes. In the official press release, Fier mentions that the old record, The James Gang Rides Again, which is a cool name-drop for this ex-Cleveland. If Kinney/Fier can come with something to rival “Funk #49,” then I salute them.
Any Golden Palomino mention makes me think for their ill-fated show in Los Angeles in 1986 at the Palace Theater. This was during the time for the local fire marshals were a black cloud over concerts, closing down many shows. Such was the case this night as the place was packed to see Michael Stipe sit in with the band. While that was interesting to me, I was more interested in seeing some of my favorites like Chris Stamey and Syd Straw perform. After an overly look opening set from Gary Myrick (if memory serves), the Palominos took the stage only to be shut down by the fire marshals. I think Stipe had to come out, sing a song and quiet the crowd before the place was cleared out.
