Start the last week of June off on a great note at the Bootleg, where they will be hosting on the big shows of the week (if not the best) in the form of the Chapin Sisters, Henry Wolfe and Harper Simon, all children of artists (either musicians or actors) who show that talent can cross generations. If you don’t want to go that far east, head over to the Mint where Rod Melancon has a late night (for a Monday) set. The Louisiana transplant has a ruggedly appealing country sound. His EP is slated for the fall.
Tuesday night’s choices center around Warren Haynes’ bluesy guitar wizardry and Sarah Jarosz’s sweeter mandolin/banjo picking. Haynes, whose latest Man in Motion finds him taking a more soulful turn, will be the El Rey. Jarosz’s terrific sophomore outing Follow Me Down should be showcased at her Hotel Café gig. If you want another option, the new wave-y NYC band the Postelles have a show at the Echo with Kitten, Pageants and Pan Am.
Sarabeth Tucek also has an impressive second album, Get Well Soon. She’ll undoubtedly be sharing songs from this haunting album on the 29th at the Bootleg Theatre. Luther Russell, who co-produced this disc, will also perform. Also on Wednesday, you can find Aussie songstress Brooke Fraser at the Music Box, Parsons Red Head leading a lineup including Alela Diane & Wild Divine at the Echo and Sondre Lerche (who released a self-titled CD earlier this month) at the El Rey.
On Friday, the Redwood welcomes the wild bluegrass action from the Water Tower Bucket Boys, who should deliver a very lively show. Local power pop legend Paul Collins will be topping the Psycho Beach Party bill at the Blue Star, while the Other Lives and the Rosebuds will be at the Satellites.
The big show on July 2 is the annual Hootenanny at Oak Canyon Ranch in the OC. This year’s lineup features Dropkick Murphys, Reverend Horton Heat, Supersuckers, Royal Crown Revue, John Doe, Rosie Flores, Big Sandy and Mojo Nixon. Things will be more chilled at the El Rey where Blonde Redhead will be performing. Jimmie Vaughan will be rockin’ up the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills on the 2nd and the LA. Guitar Festival at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center on the 3rd (other key performers include Tommy Emmanuel and Laurence Juber on the 2nd and Dick Dale on the 3rd). Hall & Oates are the special guests at the Hollywood Bowl July 2-4.
Please note that the Hotel Café concert at the Ford has been cancelled. Instead Truth and Salvage Co., Brian Wright and Erin McLaughlin will be at the Hotel Café on the 4th with Anya Marina and Meiko playing there on the 5th. The 4th also kicks off Crystal Antlers Monday nights in July residency at the Echo.
